Why EUDR Compliance Matters

The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) is reshaping how companies trade commodities such as timber, coffee, cocoa, soy, palm oil, and rubber. From December 2024, every operator or trader placing these products on the EU market must prove that their goods are deforestation-free and fully traceable to their origin.

For many exporters, this creates new challenges:

Collecting geolocation data down to the plot of land where the product was harvested.

Submitting a Due Diligence Statement (DDS) for each shipment before customs clearance.

Managing records for at least five years to pass future audits.

Facing potential fines of up to 4% of annual turnover for non-compliance.

In short, EUDR is not just about trade — it’s about protecting your business reputation, financial stability, and market access.

Frequently
Asked Questions

What is EUDR and who does it apply to?

The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) applies to anyone placing or exporting timber, cocoa, coffee, palm oil, rubber, soy, and derived products in the EU market. Both importers and traders must comply.

Implementation of EUDR has presented several challenges to exporters of the wooden products. This includes obligations on traceability and providing proof to EU that their wood does not come from deforested or degraded land after 2020. This requires changes to their system and ensuring that data collected is down to harvesting plot. This can be costly affair and even if you manage to collect this data you need to keep this data as part of your export chain and have it saved for 5 years as part of the regulation requirement. There is a requirement for each shipment exported in EU has a due- diligence requirement and there is a requirement of pre-shipment compliance check before you ship your goods to EU. This is to ensure that you don’t face costly rejection of your cargo at port of arrival in EU. There is a huge penalty (4% of your turnover for non-compliance) and this adds additional legal and financial burden on the exporter. dltledgers EUDR Chain provide a ready to use solution at a price point that you can afford to get started in this compliance journey.

No. It is beneficial if you have already implemented a European Union Timber Regulation (EUTR) Due Diligence System, It does help as a good foundation however there are additional requirements which needs to be complied in case of EUDR and there are differences in the regulation which an operator must take note. Some of the differences we have noted are in the area of extent of due diligence required, risk assessment procedures, obligations to include geolocation of plots, providing deforestation assessments in due-diligence process. Further each shipment into EU must have due diligence statement issued and filed with EUIS and there are also downstream obligations as well.

No. EU says that certifications such as PEFC or FSC can only be used by companies to help on their risk assessments to the extent that certification covers. There are additional obligations that Operators have under EUDR regulation for exercising due diligence and they are responsible for any breach and subsequent fine if any.

dltledgers EUDR Chain is based on distributed ledger framework providing immutable, secured and private ledger for your company. EUDR Chain App collects key information required and mandated by EUDR including upstream information such as Geo coordinates and harvesting dates, risk assessments, due diligence certification and integration to your current ERP system with reference number tracking. It provides end-to-end tracking with traceability features with a secured digital vault of all key documents and information with timestamp and audit. EUDR chain supports risk assessments as required by EUDR regulation and key authenticated information such as removal pass and other regulatory requirement as mandated by countries and provide a certified integration to EUIS system. It provide a digital tracking to ensure that chain is able to provide traceability for up to 7 years (EUDR only requires it for 5 years) to provide as evidence for any query that EU may have on any of the shipment exported to EU. EUDR chain is only solution which also provide an ability for legal and audit team to have a secured slice of view to provide their endorsement by further improving traceability and compliance and robustness of the submission.

Dltlegers EUDR Chain offers robust API connectivity and ready plug and play integration to widely such ERP software such as SAP, Oracle, Microsoft among others. As an Certified Provider we have automated connectivity to EUIS ( EU TRACES system) via API to submit the due diligence report as required. EUDR Chain is only solution in the market to provide this submission on distributed ledger to ensure immutability and security of the submission. We also provide support for data file imports and exports to support the SME companies to support to meet their regulatory compliance requirement, operational flexibility and efficiency.

Traceability is crucial, encompassing not only data on the origin of the logs but also their physical traceability, especially in regions with high risks of deforestation, forest degradation, or legality issues. Marking each log could be a necessary risk mitigation measure in specific high-risk scenarios. In low-risk scenarios pure data traceability might be sufficient. We can help in these scenarios to see how you get started.

The EUDR mandates that as an initial action in cases of non-compliance, incriminated products must be physically withdrawn from the market and any substantiated concerns must be communicated to the product's customers. Additionally there will be damages or fines up to 4% of the turnover can be levied on the Operator. EUDR Chain offered by dltledgers helps you reduce this risk by providing a digital end-to end framework with Traceability on ready to go SaaS Platform with immutable security.
